Article Synopsis

Emily in Paris is a 10-episode series review from the perspective of a MARKETER. From each episode, I will try to extract my top 3 learnings. For those who haven’t watched the series yet, this is going to be a spoiler-filled segment, so go watch it before you start reading.

Episode 7 – French Ending

It is said that you have to sell yourself every day, no matter, which profession are you in. At the beginning of the episode, Emily spots her boss Sylvie at an apparel store. While following her and walking down the street she finds that her boss is going for a week-long vacation. With this knowledge Emily quickly reaches out to Sylvie for a pitch; to get the flagship event of their client “Fourtier” (USD 2-million worth luxury watch brand). Sylvie, in her own very straightforward manner, rejects saying, “I don’t want another problem right now.” Eventually, Emily convinces her, saying, “You should think of handling an American actress by utilizing an American colleague in your office.”

When Emily discusses the American actress with two of her colleagues at the office their response takes her aback. They say that the American actress might be a big star in America but she’s so-so in France. The reason? They say Americans love “Happy Ending” in movies but it’s not the French style. French audiences love a realistic approach. “Welcome to the French Ending”, one of the colleagues’ comments.

The same night, she comes to find out that one of her friends loves Brooklyn and another hates her movies — an insight that shows how differently every person receives the same product.

Upon meeting with the American actress, Brooklyn Clark, she quickly comes up with the idea to associate her with the “Pierre Cadault” fashion brand (Please refer the Article-6 to know more about him). By the end of the meeting, she convinces Brooklyn to partake do an Influencer’s Post for the brand.

The next day at Brooklyn’s outfit trial at Pierre Cadault, Emily meets Cadault’s niece and Head of Business Affairs, Mathieu Cadault. He tells Emily that artists and creators often get victimized by whims and make mistakes. He reveals his reluctance on the influencer collaboration with Brooklyn. Realizing that her collaboration idea might be in jeopardy, she cleverly tricks him into thinking that another competitor “Celine” has been begging for the same collaboration. The lie works and she gets the approval for a month-long collaboration deal.

At the main event, Sylvie sees Brooklyn wearing Pierre Cadault and asks Emily about it. She smartly replies that the idea was to create a social media marketing synergy. Before the night ends and Brooklyn leaves the event, Emily manages to snap a perfect picture of the actress in the outfit, despite the chaos surrounding her.

As a Marketer, my top 3 extractions from episode – 7:

  1. You need to “sell yourself” every day to get your desired project, even at the firm you work for.
  2. Audience insight is never similar. Mindy and Camile have a different opinions of Brooklyn and her movies.
  3. Only a passionate marketer has the presence of mind to do their job correctly even during a fiasco.
