Who doesn’t want to be fit and healthy? But it is easier said than done, especially if you have a pampered palate. Experts say that staying fit is 80% diet and 20% exercise. Take me for example, I have been trying to lose a couple of kilos for ages now and regardless of how hard I work out my eating habits always fail me. Breakfast has been the toughest meal of the day to control. Cornflakes, oats, roti and fruits may be healthy but jerry-swari, gwaramari, malpa and aaluwoh are simply too delicious. Nevertheless, my quest for a healthy breakfast alternative that I can commit to, continues. Last week, I came across a possible contender — Himalayan Digestive Quick Meal, and here is my unbiased review of the product.
Himalayan Digestive Quick Meal and the Nostalgia
This product is made of five roasted wholegrains that includes wheat, soybean, barley, maize and Bengal gram flour. With no added sugar, salt, color, preservatives or flavors, there is no doubt that it is healthy. The ingredients in itself are naturally high in dietary fibers and controls cholesterol, making the final product a superfood.
Now, let’s come to the nostalgic side of this product. When I first saw the product, it immediately reminded me of chappa, also known as sattu. Growing up, my mom used to regularly make us chappa for breakfast. Of course, like any good mom she added a dollop of ghee and heaps of sugar to it, making it look and taste like halwa. My experience with Himalayan Digestive proved my guess to be correct. At its core, the product is a refined version of chappa.
Easy does it, and quick is an understatement! The suggested preparation method is to add a cup of lukewarm water or milk to a half bowl of Himalayan Digestive — takes five minutes.
As you might have already guessed, I went for milk AND a spoonful of sugar. In my humble opinion, honey would do the trick as well and still retain the meal’s health factor. My mother on the other hand, highly recommends preparing it in black tea, adding a spoonful of ghee and sugar too.
First glance: it looks like baby food. Period!
Taste test: The day a meal is healthy as well as a treat to the palate, everyone in the world would be healthy and fit. That is a fact in my book!
The first spoonful of Himalayan Digestive Quick Meal was difficult to swallow for me. I am just not used to eating something SO healthy and bland; let me reiterate, it doesn’t have any artificial flavoring. However, it should be noted that I did finish the bowl. In fact, it got better with each mouthful. It has a faint toasty aroma that fills your mouth which I learned to appreciate after each spoonful. But mostly, what kept me going was the thought of how good it was for my body. I just hope I can keep up that motivation 7 days a week.
Overall verdict: Himalayan Digestive Quick Meal is undoubtedly a health food and makes for a great meal any time of the day. What I like the most about the product is that it isn’t trying to be palate pleasing in order to sell. It is a healthy meal and if you are looking for an alternative to your stomach-bloating, fat-increasing breakfast or dinner, this is for you!
I had it for breakfast, and I found it to be light and easy on the stomach, but it still kept me full for a good few hours.
Would I eat it every day? No, because it’s just not my cup of tea. I just can’t. Having said that, this could easily be in my pantry for those days when I feel particularly inspired to be healthy. I don’t mind eating it for breakfast twice a week, while still enjoying junk on other days. As for anyone with the determination to stay on a diet, this product is a blessing.
